If I want to follow a blog, I will track down the blog through the comment link. I just don't have the time to click on every link and I find that very annoying. I also can't stand promotions of blogs on the BlogFrog visit counter showing up...I never checked those ones out !

Great tip! I think more people need to watch the SPAM like comments. Leaving comments to promote your blog are appropriate when you and that person posting are both participating in the same blog hop or maybe part of the same community or forum. A lot of times I think people are just trying to grow there followers and forget about the basics. Thanks for sharing! ;)

One of my blogs gets spam comments all the time. I tried a comments guideline policy on it but they just ignore it. I now immediately delete any comments that don't relate to the post topic at all. After all why leave a comment about a computer game on a post about lemon blueberry muffins unless it's just spam? I also check out the link that someone will be taken to if they click on the commentor's name as I've had a couple of distinctly adult only sites try and link in!

There is apparently an IP blocking script (I'm told) but I haven't used it. I do know people who have - but I don't know if it stops them commenting or stops them being able to read your blog too. Might be worth having a search for it if you're having problem.

I get a lot of those kind of comments and they stick out like a sore thumb. I always delete comments which are purely spammy, but borderline ones which seem sincere enough and justh have a blog link are fine. I made a post on this very subject last week and even drew up a comments guide so that people knew what kind of comments weren't encouraged etc. I was hesitant to publish it, but it seemed to be very well received and lost of people joined in the discussion.

I agree. I always click back to check on the commenters blog, but I don't always follow. I hate when people comment, "check out my site." I get really excited when I get a comment and it sucks to see it's just spammy!

As far as I know, there is no way to "block" certain users on Blogger blogs. If it becomes a major issue, you may want to consider moving to a blog platform with IP blocking capability, such as WordPress.

The book doesn't say anything about leaving random comments, but in my experience, a good rule of thumb is to stick to the post topic.

If you're new to a blog, it's also acceptable to leave an unrelated comment stating something like:

"I just found your blog and I absolutely LOVE it! You have such a compelling writing style and your blog itself is beautiful. I'll definitely be back. :)"

I wish I could find a way to stop the person who leaves chinese character links on my blogs posts as comments. Does the book mention anything that might help? I tried word verification, but that didn't work.
